Lonavala in the Monsoon: What to Know
July to September is when Lonavala is at its greenest and busiest. Bhushi Dam overflows, waterfalls appear around Bhaja, and the valley at Tiger Point fills with cloud. It is also when the rules tighten. After drownings at a waterfall near Bhushi Dam in 2024, the Pune district administration has issued monsoon prohibitory orders for the Lonavala area. In 2026 an order dated 6 July covered Karla and Bhaja caves, Lohagad, Visapur, Tiger Point, Lion's Point, Pawna Dam and other spots. It banned entering waterfalls and taking selfies or videos at dangerous points, and was withdrawn on 16 July once the rain eased.
Parking and Traffic in Lonavala
Most of the delay comes in the last few kilometres. On monsoon weekends the roads to Bhushi Dam and Tiger Point back up by late morning, and parking near the sights is limited and mostly run locally. A weekday visit, or an early start on a weekend, avoids most of it. The return to Mumbai and Pune is busiest on Sunday evenings.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best places to visit in Lonavala in one day?
Karla Caves, Bhaja Caves, Bhushi Dam, Tiger Point (Tiger's Leap), Lion's Point and the Khandala viewpoints at Rajmachi Point and Duke's Nose. With a car you can see five or six of these in a day; add Lohagad Fort only if you are happy to give it half a day.
Is a one-day trip to Lonavala enough?
Yes, if you go by car and leave early. Lonavala is about 65 km from Pune (around 1.5 hours) and 83 km from Mumbai (2 to 2.5 hours) by the Expressway, and the main sights are within about 15 km of the town.
What is the best one-day Lonavala itinerary from Pune?
Leave Pune by 7 AM and start with Karla and Bhaja caves, which are on your way in. Have lunch in Lonavala, then Bhushi Dam, Tiger Point and Lion's Point in the afternoon. Buy chikki in town and leave by 5:30 PM to reach Pune around 7 PM.
What is the best one-day Lonavala itinerary from Mumbai?
Leave Mumbai by 6:30 AM. Stop at the Khandala viewpoints first, reach Bhushi Dam before 10 AM, then Tiger Point and Lion's Point. After lunch, drive 11 km east to Karla Caves, and start back by 4:30 PM to stay ahead of the evening return traffic.
Which places in Lonavala are best in the monsoon?
Bhushi Dam, when water flows over its steps, the waterfalls around Bhaja Caves, Tiger Point and Lion's Point when the valley is green, and Lohagad Fort for those who trek. Viewpoints can disappear into cloud by afternoon, so go in the morning. Follow the district's monsoon safety orders and stay out of streams and waterfalls.
Are Lonavala tourist spots closed in the monsoon?
Sometimes, for short periods. In 2026 the Pune district administration issued a prohibitory order on 6 July covering Karla and Bhaja caves, Lohagad, Tiger Point, Lion's Point, Pawna Dam and other spots, banning entry into waterfalls and selfies at dangerous points. It was withdrawn on 16 July when the rain eased. Check for current orders before a monsoon trip.
Is there an entry fee for Karla and Bhaja caves?
Yes. Both are protected monuments of the Archaeological Survey of India, and each charges a small ASI entry ticket at the gate. Children under 15 enter free at ASI ticketed monuments. The viewpoints, Bhushi Dam and the Khandala points are free, though local parking charges may apply.
What is the Khandala ghat viewpoint?
Usually Rajmachi Point, on the old Mumbai–Pune highway at Khandala, which looks across the valley to Rajmachi fort, and Duke's Nose, the cliff named for its resemblance to the Duke of Wellington's nose. Both are about 5 km from Lonavala town.
How much does a Lonavala day trip by cab cost from Pune or Mumbai?
Our one-way Lonavala fare is the same from Pune and Mumbai: ₹2,700 on the Citroën EC3, ₹3,200 on the MG ZS EV, ₹3,800 on the Kia Clavis EV, ₹6,000 on the Toyota Innova Hycross, with 120 km, driver, fuel and the Expressway toll included. A same-day return, with the car staying with you all day, is quoted on request.
Where do you park in Lonavala?
Most sights have roadside or paid parking run locally. On monsoon weekends the approach roads to Bhushi Dam and Tiger Point back up by late morning and parking fills, which is the main reason to arrive early or come on a weekday. With a cab, the driver drops you at the entrance.
