Coming from Mumbai, the Khalapur food court is the obvious break. It sits on the Expressway about 45 minutes out of the city, just before the climb, with restaurant counters, chai and clean restrooms. Families who would rather hold out can eat at Mapro near Lonavala instead. Your driver will stop for 15 minutes at no charge; say where when you set off. From Mumbai, Lonavala is about 83 km away. Cars from the western suburbs and the island city head out by the Eastern Express Highway or the Sion–Panvel road, join the Mumbai–Pune Expressway after Panvel, pass the Khalapur toll plaza and then climb into the Sahyadris. Khandala comes first, then the Lonavala exit, a little before the road carries on towards Pune. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours.
Timing matters more from this side than from Pune. The bottleneck is getting out of the city and through Panvel and Khalapur, and on a Saturday morning that queue builds early. A 6:30 AM start gets you past it; it also puts you at Bhushi Dam before 10 AM, while it is still quiet. Coming back on Sunday, leaving Lonavala by mid-afternoon keeps you ahead of the evening rush into Mumbai.

The usual stop is the Khalapur food court, about 45 minutes out of Mumbai and just before the climb. It has restaurant counters, chai and clean restrooms. A 15-minute refreshment break is part of the fare.
