Atal Setu (the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link) is the faster way from Pune to South Mumbai: the 21.8 km sea bridge runs from Chirle near Panvel to Sewri and skips Vashi, Chembur and Sion. It is not yet joined directly to the Expressway; a short stretch of local road links the two until MMRDA's connector opens (target February 2027). Car toll: ₹250 one way. Electric cars: ₹0 since 22 August 2025.
Tolls, rules and project status last verified 8 Oct 2026 against official notices and dated news reports. Sources are listed at the end.
Atal Setu or Vashi: Which Route From Pune?
Both routes start the same way: the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, now with the Missing Link, down to Panvel. The difference is how you cross into Mumbai. Atal Setu lands on the east side of the island city at Sewri. The older route crosses the Vashi creek bridge and runs through Chembur and Sion, which is the natural way into the suburbs.

Which Mumbai Areas Is Atal Setu Faster For?
A simple rule: south of Dadar, use Atal Setu; north and west of Dadar, use Vashi. Around Dadar and Worli it depends on the day's traffic, so check a live map before you leave.
| Going to | Usually quicker |
|---|---|
| Colaba, Fort, Nariman Point, Churchgate, Marine Drive | Atal Setu |
| Byculla, Parel, Lower Parel, Wadala, Sewri | Atal Setu (Worli: check traffic) |

Is Atal Setu Connected to the Mumbai–Pune Expressway?
Not directly. The bridge ends at the Chirle interchange, and from there you take the JNPT road and Palaspe Phata near Panvel to reach the Expressway. That link is ordinary road with junctions and trucks heading to the port, and it is where most of the time on this route is lost.
MMRDA is building a 7.35 km, six-lane elevated connector from Chirle to the Expressway at Palaspe. Reports from mid-2026 put the target at February 2027, with most piers and girders in place. Until it opens, treat the Chirle–Palaspe stretch as the slow part of the trip.
Atal Setu Toll Charges by Vehicle
A car pays ₹250 one way or ₹375 for a return, with a ₹625 daily pass and a ₹12,500 monthly pass. The state set these rates in January 2024 and kept them unchanged through 2025, with a yearly review. We could not find a 2026 revision. Collection is by FASTag. Add the ₹320 Expressway toll (Urse and Khalapur plazas) and a petrol car pays ₹570 from Pune to South Mumbai via Atal Setu. You can price your own trip with our Mumbai–Pune toll calculator.
Is Atal Setu Free for EVs?
Yes. Maharashtra's EV Policy 2025 waives the toll for electric four-wheelers and electric buses on Atal Setu, the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and the Samruddhi Mahamarg. The waiver was implemented from 22 August 2025. Electric goods vehicles are excluded. A strong hybrid such as the Toyota Innova Hycross has a petrol engine and is not an electric vehicle, so it pays the full toll. More on how the exemption works in our Maharashtra EV toll exemption guide.
How Long Does Pune to Mumbai via Atal Setu Take?
The bridge itself is quick. Cars are limited to 100 km/h on the deck and 40 km/h on the ramps, so the 21.8 km crossing takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes. The rest of the journey depends on the Expressway (see the best time to travel) and on the Chirle–Palaspe link road. For South Mumbai, the time you save is the Vashi, Chembur and Sion stretch, which is worst on weekday mornings and evenings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Atal Setu connected to the Mumbai–Pune Expressway?
Not directly, yet. Atal Setu ends at Chirle in Navi Mumbai, and you drive a short stretch of local road via the JNPT road and Palaspe Phata near Panvel to reach the Expressway. MMRDA is building a 7.35 km six-lane elevated connector from Chirle to the Expressway at Palaspe, with a reported completion target of February 2027.
What is the Atal Setu toll for a car?
₹250 one way and ₹375 for a return trip, with a daily pass at ₹625 and a monthly pass at ₹12,500. These rates were set in January 2024 and the state cabinet kept them unchanged through 2025. We could not find a published 2026 revision; check MMRDA before you rely on the figure.
Is Atal Setu free for electric cars?
Yes. Under Maharashtra's EV Policy 2025, electric four-wheelers and electric buses pay no toll on Atal Setu, the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and the Samruddhi Mahamarg. The waiver was implemented from 22 August 2025. Electric goods vehicles are not covered, and hybrids such as the Toyota Innova Hycross are not electric vehicles, so they pay the full toll.
What is the total toll from Pune to Mumbai via Atal Setu?
For a petrol or diesel car, ₹570 one way: ₹320 on the Expressway (Urse and Khalapur plazas) plus ₹250 on Atal Setu. Via Vashi it is ₹320, because the Vashi entry toll has been free for cars since October 2024. An electric car pays ₹0 on either route.
Is Pune to Mumbai faster via Atal Setu?
For South and central Mumbai (Colaba, Fort, Nariman Point, Byculla, Parel, Wadala), usually yes, because the bridge drops you at Sewri next to the Eastern Freeway and skips the Vashi bridge, Chembur and Sion. For the western suburbs, BKC, Powai and the airport, the Vashi and Sion–Panvel route is normally quicker.
Which route should I take from Pune to Andheri or Bandra?
Use the Vashi bridge and Sion–Panvel highway, then the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road or the Eastern Express Highway depending on where you are going. Atal Setu lands you at Sewri on the east side of the island city, which is the wrong side for the western suburbs.
How long is Atal Setu and how long does it take to cross?
The bridge is about 21.8 km from Sewri to Chirle, most of it over the sea. Cars are limited to 100 km/h on the bridge and 40 km/h on the ramps, so the crossing itself takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes in normal traffic.
Can I take a cab or a two-wheeler on Atal Setu?
Cars, taxis, minibuses and two-axle buses are allowed. Motorcycles, mopeds, auto-rickshaws, tractors and other slow vehicles are not, under the Mumbai Police notification issued when the bridge opened in January 2024.
Does the Atal Setu route change my Orbitmiles fare?
No. Our fare is fixed when you book (from ₹2,700 on the Citroën EC3 for up to 150 km), and our three electric cars pay no toll on either bridge. If you are going to South Mumbai, tell us when you book and the driver will plan the Atal Setu route.
Is Mumbai to Pune via Atal Setu the same route in reverse?
Yes. From South Mumbai you join Atal Setu at Sewri, cross to Chirle, and follow the local link road to the Expressway near Panvel. The same toll applies in that direction: ₹250 for a car, ₹0 for an electric car.
