A one-day trip means about 687 km and a 17–18 hour day, and it hinges on reaching Lenyadri's climb of roughly 300 steps before its gate closes, around 6 PM. It can be driven in a day; it rarely feels like a pilgrimage.

Why Do the Answers Online Disagree?
One widely read travel guide says the yatra cannot be done in under two days. A Pune cab operator's guide says one day, 17–18 hours. They are both right about different things. As a drive, eight temples and roughly 690 km fit inside a very long day. As a darshan — time to stand in a queue, offer prayers and sit for a moment at each temple — they do not.
The distance alone explains much of it. Four temples lie east of Pune, two near Junnar to the north, and two in Raigad below the Sahyadri ghats to the west. Our leg-by-leg Ashtavinayak route map from Pune shows that the ghat crossing from Lenyadri down to Khopoli alone is 178 km, with Pali 35 km beyond. However you arrange the temples, at least one long ghat crossing is unavoidable.
The Deciding Constraint: Lenyadri's Closing Time
Seven of the eight temples keep long hours — early morning to late evening. Lenyadri is the exception. Shri Girijatmaj sits inside a rock-cut Buddhist cave complex high on a hillside near Junnar, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, and you reach it by a steep stone stairway.
Here the published closing times conflict. Some temple guides list darshan until 8 PM. Our own package data lists 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The evidence points to the earlier figure being the one that matters: the ASI lists the monument as open sunrise to sunset, and a temple-information guide that gives 8 PM also notes a last entry of 6:30 PM and warns that the ASI may close the steps after 6 PM. In other words, the shrine may stay lit later, but you cannot reach it once the gate at the foot of the stairs shuts.
That is why one day is so hard. Lenyadri is at the northern edge of the circuit, and Pali and Mahad are 200-odd km away over the ghats. Visit Lenyadri late and you reach Raigad close to the evening closing times; visit it early and the eastern temples have to be squeezed into the remaining hours. Something always gives — and usually it is the time you spend at the temples.
Lenyadri's Steps: Counts Differ
Published counts range from 283 to 338 steps, with 307 and 307–315 also quoted, depending on the source and on what is counted. Maharashtra Tourism gives 307. Whatever the figure, it is a steep climb of roughly 300 stone steps with no lift. Anyone with knee trouble, a heart condition or breathing difficulty can wait comfortably at the base while the rest of the group climbs. Doli carriers have been reported at the base, but they cannot be guaranteed — do not plan the day around one.
Two Days: The Realistic Minimum
Our 2-day route takes the four eastern temples on Day 1 and halts at Ozar, then does Ozar and Lenyadri early on Day 2 — well inside Lenyadri's hours — before the single ghat crossing to Pali and Mahad and the drive home. Day 1 is about 340 km; Day 2 is about 347 km and returns you to Pune around 9:15 PM. It works well for fit families with limited leave. It is not unhurried.
Three Days: Unhurried, and in Scriptural Order
Our 3-day Shastoyukt route keeps the shastrokta order, Morgaon to Ranjangaon, over 714 km. Day 1 ends by mid-afternoon; Day 2 carries both ghat crossings; Day 3 reaches Lenyadri at 8 AM and you are home by about 5:30 PM. For senior travellers, or anyone for whom the order matters, this is the one we recommend. Pick Your Dates as Carefully as Your Days
Crowds change the arithmetic. Every Sankashti Chaturthi draws large gatherings at all eight temples, and an Angarki most of all — the next is on 29 September 2026. Ganesh Chaturthi week, usually in August or September, is the busiest time of the year, and even a two-day plan becomes very difficult to hold. For a quieter darshan, choose another day; October to February is the most comfortable window. The dates are in our temple crowd calendar. Temples also close occasionally for conservation work — Ranjangaon was closed to devotees from 15 April to 31 July 2026 — so check the news before you fix a date.
