The longest leg is the ghat crossing from Lenyadri down to Khopoli, 178 km. Totals quoted elsewhere range from 400 to 700 km because they measure different things.

Where the Eight Temples Sit
Think of Pune as the centre of a rough triangle. Four temples lie east and south-east of the city on the Deccan plateau; two sit north near Junnar; and two lie west, below the Sahyadri escarpment in Raigad district. Any route has to cover all three corners, and the western pair is what makes the circuit long.

Our 3-Day Scriptural Route, Leg by Leg (714 km)
The scriptural route keeps the shastrokta order, 1 to 8, which means crossing the Sahyadri ghats twice on Day 2 — down to Raigad for Pali and Mahad, then back up for Theur. That second crossing is why it runs about 27 km longer than the 2-day route: the price of keeping the order. Your overnight stops are near Daund or Siddhatek, then near Theur.

Search for the Ashtavinayak distance from Pune and you will find at least four different answers:

Start and end point. Our figures run from your door in Pune and back to it, including the drive out of and into the city. Many published totals run temple to temple, or leave out the final drive home.
The road, not the map. Pali and Mahad sit below the ghats in Raigad. From Lenyadri, the practical road runs down to Khopoli — 178 km on our plan — and on to Pali, another 35 km. There is no shortcut across the escarpment.
The wrong Mahad. Varadvinayak is at Mahad village near Khopoli, not Mahad town in Raigad, about 80 km further south. Many route calculators and some published totals mix the two up, which inflates the total: Mahad town is roughly 139 km from Pune by road, while the temple is about 82 km away.
Meals and nights. Our legs include the lunch stops (Daund, Khopoli, Narayangaon) and the drive to and from your overnight stay, because that is the distance the car actually covers.
A total under 450 km is hard to square with the road network at all: our eastern loop alone — Pune, Morgaon, Siddhatek, Theur, Ranjangaon, Ozar — is 340 km before the crossing to Raigad even begins. None of this changes what you pay; our fares are fixed and include tolls, parking and fuel.
Mahad Means Mahad Village, Not Mahad Town
Shri Varadvinayak, the fourth temple, is in Mahad village in Khalapur taluka, near Khopoli and just off the old Mumbai–Pune highway — about 37 km from Pali and 82 km from Pune on our routes. It is not in Mahad town, the taluka headquarters about 80 km further south in Raigad on the Mumbai–Goa highway. Typing "Mahad" alone into a map app can send you to the town; search for "Varadvinayak Temple, Khalapur" instead.
Before You Set Out
The ghat crossing is the slow part of every route, and heavy rain or roadworks on the ghat section can add an hour. In the monsoon, flooding on the Bhima can occasionally affect the Siddhatek approach. Lenyadri's cave temple is reached by roughly 300 steep stone steps (published counts range from 283 to 338); doli carriers have been reported at the base but cannot be guaranteed. Its gate also closes much earlier than the other seven temples — our 1, 2 or 3 days guide explains why that decides whether a one-day trip works. Sankashti Chaturthis and Angarkis draw the largest gatherings at all eight temples; for a quieter darshan, choose another day from our temple crowd calendar.
