The Cylinder in the Boot
Here is the part that rarely gets explained to passengers. A large share of the intercity cab fleet on this corridor runs on CNG, for a sound commercial reason: fuel cost per kilometre is dramatically lower than petrol or diesel. For an operator running 300 km a day, that difference is the business.
But CNG has to be stored somewhere, and it is stored at high pressure in a cylindrical steel tank. In a retrofitted hatchback or sedan — which is most of them — that cylinder is mounted in the boot floor.
This is not a small imposition. The tank is round, it is rigid, and it sits exactly where the flat floor of the boot used to be. What remains is a shallow, awkwardly shaped space around a steel curve. A 28-inch check-in case that would have laid flat now has to be balanced on top of the cylinder, wedged in at an angle, or left out entirely. Two large cases in a CNG sedan boot is often optimistic. Four is usually not happening.
The passenger discovers this at the doorstep, with a flight to catch.
Why the Battery Does Not Have This Problem
An electric vehicle also has to store its energy somewhere, and a battery pack is heavy and bulky. The difference is shape and therefore placement.
An EV battery is a flat rectangular slab. It is engineered into the floor pan of the car, underneath the cabin, between the axles — a design usually called a skateboard platform. This is not done for luggage reasons; it is done because putting the heaviest component low and centred gives the car better balance and handling.
The luggage benefit is a side effect, and it is a real one. Because the energy store lives under your feet rather than under your suitcases, the boot keeps its original depth, its flat floor, and its square shape. Nothing was given up to make room for fuel. On some EVs you also get storage under the bonnet where an engine used to be.
This is the honest version of the EV luggage argument, and it is worth being precise about it: an EV does not have a magically bigger boot. It has an un-compromised one. That distinction matters, and it is the one that actually holds up when a passenger opens the hatch to check.
Why Boot Litres Are a Bad Way to Choose
If you go looking for boot capacity figures, you will find litres. Litres are close to useless for this decision, and our own fleet is the clearest possible proof.
The Kia Clavis EV lists 216 litres with all three rows upright — the smallest number in our fleet. The MG ZS EV lists 448 litres, more than double. If you chose on litres alone you would book the MG and expect twice the luggage.
You would be wrong. With four passengers and the third row folded, the Clavis carries four large check-in bags plus four cabin bags. The MG carries two and two. The Clavis is the most capable luggage vehicle we run, and the spec sheet says the opposite.
The reason is that litres measure volume, not usable shape. A tall narrow well and a wide flat floor can hold identical litres and completely different numbers of suitcases, because a suitcase is a rigid rectangle that does not pour like water. A seat that folds changes everything and is not counted in the headline figure at all.
This is why we publish bag counts rather than litres. Every number in the table below was arrived at by physically loading the vehicle with real 23 kg cases — not calculated from a brochure.
The Tradeoff Nobody Tells You About: Seats or Luggage
There is a second problem, and it applies to every 6-seater MPV regardless of what it runs on. The third row of seats and your suitcases occupy the same physical space. You can have one or the other. You cannot have both.
This is simple geometry, but it is routinely glossed over at booking. A "6-seater" listing implies you get six seats and the boot. What you actually get, with all six seats upright, is the narrow strip of floor behind the third row — enough for soft cabin bags, not for four rigid check-in cases.

So the honest guidance is this. If you are six people going to the airport with full check-in luggage, one vehicle is not the answer — you need two cars, and we would rather tell you that at booking than at your doorstep. If you are four people with a lot of luggage, either 6-seater with the third row folded is ideal. If you are six people travelling light, both work as they are.
We ask for passenger count and bag count when you book for exactly this reason. Those two numbers together decide the vehicle. Either one alone does not.

A "large check-in bag" is a standard 23 kg airline case. A "cabin bag" is the 7 kg carry-on size. The two 6-seaters appear twice because the third row and a full check-in load cannot both be in the car at the same time — pick the row that matches how many people are actually travelling.
Why This Matters More on This Corridor Than Most
Luggage capacity is a minor concern on a 20-minute city hop. You can hold a bag on your lap. On Pune–Mumbai it is a different proposition for three reasons.
It is a three-hour drive. A suitcase on your lap for 150 km is not an inconvenience, it is the whole journey. There is no point in a premium cabin if a passenger is wedged under a duffel bag from Khopoli to Vashi.
It is disproportionately an airport route.
