Why London and Europe flights mean an evening or pre-dawn drive

London has the most choice from Mumbai: about eight flights a day to the UK on the summer board, from British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Air India and IndiGo. Continental Europe leaves T2 in one tight overnight window, between about 12:40 AM and 2:40 AM. For someone in Pune that splits into two quite different trips: an evening pickup for the overnight flights, or a pre-dawn pickup for London's daytime departures.

The overnight flights need an evening pickup on the day before the date on your ticket. That catches people out: a 1:40 AM flight on the 12th means leaving Pune on the evening of the 11th, between 6:10 PM and 6:40 PM. London's daytime flights need a pickup in the small hours instead: for the 9:30 AM British Airways flight leave between 2:00 AM and 2:30 AM, and for the 12:50 PM flight between 5:20 AM and 5:50 AM.

Every time below follows the same rule: be at T2 4 hours before departure, as the airport advises, which puts the Pune pickup 7 to 7.5 hours before the flight. How the rule works.

Connections

Common connections

For cities without a nonstop from Mumbai, the usual connections are the big European hubs above or the Gulf. Turkish Airlines leaves for Istanbul around 6:55 AM. Virgin Atlantic asks passengers to use Gate 7 at T2, and its check-in opens 4 hours before departure and closes 1 hour before.

Usual connecting airports: London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Amsterdam, Paris, Istanbul, Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi.

Transit visas

Paperwork that affects your timing

Transit visas for Indian passport holders, at the airports where travellers from Pune usually connect:

  • United Kingdom. Changing planes at a UK airport on an Indian passport needs a Direct Airside Transit Visa, unless you hold a valid US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand visa or a residence card from one of those countries, among other exemptions listed by the Home Office. Check: Home Office transit guidance (gov.uk).
  • Germany. News reports say Germany stopped requiring an airport transit visa from Indian passport holders on 3 June 2026, for connections that stay airside. Reports differ on which airports apply beyond Frankfurt and Munich, so confirm with the German missions in India before you book. Check: German missions in India.
  • France. France dropped its airport transit visa for Indian passport holders from 10 April 2026, for the international zone only, as a pilot to be reviewed after six months. That review falls around October 2026, so check the official visa site before connecting in Paris. Check: France-Visas (official).
  • Netherlands. The Dutch government says Indian nationals usually do not need an airport transit visa to change planes at Amsterdam Schiphol. Check: NetherlandsWorldwide.
  • Switzerland. We have not checked Swiss airport transit rules for Indian passport holders. Ask your airline before booking a Zurich connection.

Visa rules change. The official sites linked here, and your airline, have the final word.
